What if there was a natural resource that exists in the natural environment that is not scarce and economically useful in production or consumption. Wouldn’t this be a perfect alternative to replace the current energy supplies?
I have always seen natural resources as something very special. I am always amazed at the beauty the earth hold. During the summer of 2012, I was an intern in GSMB, which stands for Geological Survey and Mining Bureau, in Sri Lanka. This experience has enriched me a lot. I could have a glaze of what the earth is contained of, and how the men kind had found ways to profit from it. I also had the opportunity to visit mines, places where people extract stones from the earth and sold them later. Then I had another wow moment, it was during summer 2013, in Indonesia. I have experienced tourism. It was a very enriching experience.

One volcano that stood out was the Marapi. Its last eruption was on the 25th of October 2010 (“Merapi spews lava”). The burning lava had destroyed all of the people’s homes. It was a very sad story. However, when we were going through the hill towards the volcano we passed by huge solidified lava flows. And strangely there were lots of people mining there. Then we asked our local guide what they were doing. He explained to us that in this region they collect the lava stones and powder to sell it as sculpture materials. The local artists used solidified lava as a base for sculptures. I found that concept very innovative: people managed to change misery to opportunity. The locals had found an ingenious way to move forward. It created jobs and revenue and it kept them occupied. Then I had a series of thoughts that lead me to write this paper.

It is obvious that any being will have to use its environment to survive, however, the human being has gone a step further. They started using the Earth’s natural resources as commodities to trade them among themselves. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize the impact of the footprint they were leaving behind them. Therefore it is important, to understand find the balance between exploitation and destruction. Menkind also considered volcanoes as natural resources. It can become economically used either in its raw state or after a minimal amount of processing. The question that has to be dealt with is how could we take advantage of it without doing any harm to the environment? ...Download file to see next pages Read More
