Job Diary Week # 1 Monday: Morning It is the first day of my internship in the Internal Auditing Department at an insurance company. I feel both anxious and nervous because of the experience I am going to have. Creating a good impression is what is ringing in my mind, so I have to keep time and be punctual on the first day of my internship. I arrive at the company before 8.00 am and check in with the secretary to the human resource manager. She confirms my appointment and sends me straight to the manager’s office. We have a lengthy talk with the manager who tells me all about the company’s mission and vision statements. We break for lunch at about 12.30 am. Afternoon The human resource manager introduces me to the chief auditor from the auditing department of the insurance company. The chief auditor concludes the day in the evening by promising me that the next day I will be oriented in the auditing department within the company. Tuesday: Morning The second day of my internship, I arrive in the office at 8.00 am; I am gaining confidence with this endeavor. I meet up with the chief auditor in his office; to my surprise he had called the main employees from the auditing department in his conference room for a formal introduction procedure. Afternoon The chief auditor has put me on the hands of the supervisor; we manage to move from one station to another within the auditing department getting to know what each station and employee contribute to the whole functioning of the department. After the tour, the supervisor winds up the day by talks on how the company has provided the employees with a conducive work environment. Wednesday: Morning The third day of my internship, the chief auditor, gives me the room to ask anybody any question concerning the auditing department. I have been instructed to visit any part of the department I do not feel well acquainted. Technically, I am taking a solo tour getting to know all the paths and corners within the company. Afternoon The chief auditor gives me permission to go home early since the next day I am to start serious business within the company. Thursday: Morning My day in the office as usual starts at 8.00 am, under the instructions of the chief auditor, the supervisor takes me to sections where the bank reconciliation audits are handled. I get familiar with the employees and the work they do in that section. Afternoon I am shown how the documents are handled and stored as either soft or hard copies. Friday: Morning hours I start working on the reconciliation audits by myself since I have mastered the procedures to follow. I realize that my speed is not same as the other co-workers, but with time, I know I will catch up. Afternoon With the help of a co-worker, I learn how to work with both soft and hard copy of the audits. The week is ending; I appreciate the fact that I have learnt a lot of new things, and I hope the following week will even be more. Week # 2 Monday: Morning It is my second week as an intern. From the experiences, I had last Friday; I start working on a high note. There is a memo on the notice board scheduling a departmental meeting on Friday. Afternoon I arrange the documents according to the transaction made either payment or recipient also depending on the month they were processed. I begin noticing the workload building up slowly, and this gives me motivation to work harder. Tuesday: Morning It is a busy day work starts on schedule at 8.00 am, and I have been assigned some duties which I am to handle for the rest of the week. The supervisor presents me with a performance contract which is to act as guidance towards the tasks assigned to me. Afternoon During lunch break, I had a chat with a co-worker who assured me that a performance contract is not a threat but an opportunity to prove oneself. I am re-energized; ready to embark on the duties I have been delegated. Wednesday: Morning The day starts with going through a large pile of files and papers looking for the best documents for research purposes. Identifying the right documents proves to be one of the hardest tasks, but I am determined to complete it. Afternoon I walk into the office from my lunch break and notice large pile of papers waiting for my attention. At this point, I am to copy some data from the document which are to be used for research. I end the day after copying the required data from the files. Twisting my neck as a result of looking at the data sheet down the desk and the computer screen up ahead leaves me with neck pains. Afternoon I continue the afternoon by analyzing my data from both Ms Excel and Ms Access finalizing on the reports. The day ends with my neck pains building up; I have to look for pain killers. Friday: Morning I am glad today I do not have to engage in hard tasks as yesterday. There is supposed to be a departmental meeting at 10.00. I quickly print my reports; my supervisor is to present them at the meeting. The agendas in the meeting are department appraisal, presentation of reports and review of performance contracts. Afternoon The meeting continues on through the afternoon. My reports are given thumbs up by the chief auditor. Achievers within the department are acknowledged while others are reminded about the room for improvement. The meeting ends with a lot of excitement on my part.
