People commit crimes for a number of reasons, although the most frequent are resentment and cash. It is an observation that drug and alcohol abuse also have a significant part in crimes. The majority of individuals detained for crimes mostly indicate that they were under the influence of abovementioned addiction. An additional important factor is family background, or the environment within which a human being is raised. If a person considers crime as the means to stay alive and his ‘role model’ does it, there is fine probability that he will follow suit. A large number of “crimes against property”, for instance, theft, stealing and shoplifting, mostly involve drug addicts (Williams & McShane, 2009). The addicts become short of cash for their subsequent ‘fix’ and require a little ‘quick money’ or something to trade for money. On the other hand, when individuals are not able to control their emotions, they end up doing domestic violence, which is now considered as one of the most common crimes nowadays. In particular, women mostly are the victims in domestic violence; however, there have been cases of men becoming the victims as well. In the majority of cases, murder is committed by someone the sufferer is familiar with. Serial killers, who mostly choose victims at the ‘dictates of chance’ with no obvious reason have been identified to “become overcome with the urge to kill” (Lily et al, 2010), similar to the addict who wants his fix. It has been an observation that this situation is an outcome of both genetic as well as environmental aspects. This is a psychological sickness at work. Early caution symptoms take account of arson and brutality towards animals. “Crime costs the United States billions of dollars every year” (Williams & McShane, 2009). Costs appear not just from lost belongings, remunerations and health care expenditures, but the huge amount of cash siphoned into the detention center. Legal costs are an additional aspect when talking about crime. One must consider of all the wages remunerated to legal representatives as well as public advocates, in addition to the utility bills for courtrooms. Possibly, the major expenditure is reimbursing the law enforcement agencies all over the nation to fight crime to have safe streets. The death sentence has not been shown to act as prevention for crime, although it does convey the message indicating that it means business. “It is hard to say how many inmates get more out of prison other than hooking up with fellow criminals and learning new ways to commit crimes” (Tibbetts & Hemmens, 2009). Individuals who would really like to amend have the most excellent shot; however, not all jails have self-enhancement plans. It may as well seem more convenient to fit in the “criminal flow than to fight against it” (Lily et al, 2010) and appear an improved person. Drug as well as alcohol self-assistance plans are acknowledged to work, but again, merely if the individual looking for cure sincerely wishes to transform. Crimes take place when a prospect offers itself. In a number if instances, individuals who are responsive towards their environment and take extra preventative measures can stay away from being the target simply by being attentive. Putting security devices in residences and cars and not taking the dark street alone at night are a few apparent approaches to give criminals one less chance to get a prey. The criminal is either psychologically unwell, mentally sick, not having prospects to legally accomplish objectives, has ‘criminality’ in his inherited composition, was grown with or taught by criminals, interacted with criminals, desired to be a criminal, was pushed into it by the social order or a upsetting event reaction, or has a hormone disproportion. Variables Economic Conditions: Usually, as anticipated, a raise in officially authorized economic prospects decreases the crime rate. A raise in standard yearly earnings seems to decrease both aggressive crime as well as property offense by a more or less proportionate amount. Demographic and Cultural Situations: Crime rates are particularly high in city regions. The basis for this effect is less obvious; the effect possibly reveals an advanced yield of criminal activities proportionate to that of law enforcement agency within city areas, instead of a higher relative inclination for criminal activities of city inhabitants. The aggressive crime rate, consecutively, seems to be strongly reliant on the composition of the inhabitants. Property offense, on the contrary, seems to be linked to just single considerable behavioral situation. Assumptions The assumptions are that simply by treating an individual who has committed “a criminal act as someone who is unwell and helpless without treatment cannot address the problems completely” (Copes & Topalli, 2009); punishing the criminal act and not dealing with the psychological root cause is of little or no significance, and psychotherapy is the single approach by which the psychological root cause can be addressed effectively. Methodology Since the start of the discipline, quantitative methods have offered the key research methods for checking the allocation and sources of crime. Quantitative methods offer several techniques to acquire information that is helpful in various characteristics of society. The application of quantitative methods, for instance, “survey research, field research, and evaluation research as well as others” (Bushway & Weisburd, 2005), facilitate criminologists to collect consistent and legitimate information useful in the field of criminology. The information can, and is regularly, utilized by criminologists along with other social scientists while making fundamental statements regarding variables being researched. Quantitative methods of research are methods, like surveys and experiments that trace deviation in social life with respect to category that fluctuate in quantity. Statistics that are considered as quantitative are either figures or attributes that can be structured with respect to size. This indicates that the research is not supported by a subjective explanation of the observations but intends to be further objective and unbiased study supported by the statistical result of quantitative research. While studying criminology, the research methods are inclined to be quantitative due to the possibility for ‘preconceived notion’ within qualitative research (Copes & Topalli, 2009). On the other hand, there are several factors not appropriate for quantitative study. Arguments and personal viewpoint seem to be more inclined by sentiments instead of systematic study. This makes quantitative research a complicated, but valuable approach for research. References Bushway, S. and Weisburd, D. (2005). Quantitative Methods in Criminology. Ashgate Pub Co.
